September 20-”that’s funny….”
“The most exciting phrase to hear in Science, the one that heralds new discoveries is not “Eureka” but “that’s funny…” – Issac Asimov
While best known for his science fiction work, Issac Asimov, I recently learned, has the distinction of being the only writer with books published in all ten categories of the Dewey Decimal System except philosophy. Science is the art of systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimentation. Metaphysical science is a realm largely consisting of the unseen, the vibrational and the laboratory of spirit and grace.
As musicians, we are keen observers of not only the terrestrial realm but the spirit realm as well. Where did your talent originate? If you have questions about the origin of your ability to communicate through music, take a scientific approach. Observe the world around you, recall your dreams in the sleep state, notice the minutiae of sound in each observation. This is a vibrational universe and we are vibrational humans. Deepak Chopra says we are “bundles of energy” in a thinking universe. Musicians, with their keen sense of rhythm, timing and the vibrational nature of sticks and strings, develop an intimate relationship with sticks and strings.
Sarah Ban Breathnatch observes that “Artists depend on the higher harmonic of synchronicity. And because they expect it, they receive it.”
A musicians life is filled with ”that’s funny” moments. Recognize this as a Celestine Moment -serendipity, luck, chance, fate…is simply the manifestation of grace and God in your life.
“Today begin an experiment in enlightenment. For one week operate on the assumption that nothing that happens in your daily round is accidental. ” suggests the brilliant Sarah.
Change a tuning, change the entire way you write a song, experiment with modes and timing and don’t be afraid to take a scientific approach to your art.
Sound is such an enticing opiate. Experiment and elevate your style. Approach a session of practice with the mind of a scientist breaking new ground. When you’re out in the world notice the pound of a hammer, the timbre of childrens’ voices, the hum of the milkshake machine, the drip of coffee.
Vibrate to your highest calling. To spread love and spirit through your art.
