September 18- Your inner child is tugging at your sleeve…

"Know you what it is to be a child?"“A grownup is a child with layers on.” Woody Harrelson

My eight year old alter ego is Mini T. She thinks odd thoughts and she does strange things because she is not grown up. Like most 8 year olds she is at the age where she has come into her own. If we grow long fingernails shouldn’t they be painted red- she peruses the fingernail polish aisle like an antiques dealer. It doesn’t help when Big T steps in to explain we have never had red fingernails and never will. And no we cannot have the dangly earrings, pirate sword or the tiara. Not until Halloween.
She likes anything that has to do with dragons and insists on sleeping with a small stuffed puppy named Richmond. Mini T keeps a coloring book and crayons close by Big Tammy’s desk to keep her occupied when Big Tammy is being overwhelmed with work. She likes Tasha Tudor and Dr Suess books and mixes them up with Big T’s volumes on philosophy, religion and metaphysics.
She also like to go to Krispy Kreme and watch the doughnut making machine. She likes to make cupcakes and keeps a stash in the refrigerator and ices one fresh each day to eat after lunch. Sometimes she insists on a smattering of sprinkles or a birthday candle if she’s feeling blue. At the market she chooses Toy Story paper towels that feautre Buzz Lightyear instead of those dull, plain white things. And if there is a swingset within walking distance of an adult function, well, she is going to go swing and there is nothing you can do to stop her.
Your inner child is no match for you so just stop trying to suppress her and please don’t deny her else she will kick and scream. For gosh sakes please give into him or her at least once a day. Throw caution to the wind and just let her have that ice cream cone or Oreo cookie or walk outside to kick the leaves. After the rush and the sugar high and a little rest, she may be enlightened enough to show you a way to connect those tour dots or complete that musical phrase with just the right notes. She may steer you to the exact word you needed to impart just the right emotion. Give her her time and she’ll show you miracles.
Encounter sheer delight on a daily basis.  Notice how the morning sun throws rainbow beams on your walls through a crystal hung in your window. Relish a gorgeous leaf found on a sidewalk. And if you’ve lost your inner child, visit a playground in the middle of the day or take a field trip to a toy store. “Know you what it is to be a child? It is to be so little that the elves can reach to whisper in your ear. ” says Francis Thompson.
Your inner child is tugging at your sleeve. Are you paying attention?
