October 09-Smoke and Mirrors

Mr. Bitty knows it all...

Mr. Bitty knows it all...

“It is dangerous to let the public behind the scenes. They are easily disillusioned and then they are angry with you, for it was the illusion that they loved.” -w.s. maugham

In this season of tricks or treats, innocent deception becomes a childlike game. Masks and costumes turn children into superheros or villains or fairy princesses.  Even most grown ups find themselves caught up in the mystery of the season. Indeed, this is the time of year when the veil between the supernatural world and our earthly plane is its thinnest, encouraging the spirit realm to infiltrate and influence our human existence.

This thin cobweb between the worlds encourages us to think of smoke and mirrors, purposeful or innocent deception meant to cloud perception about a person, place or thing. We’re most familiar with the term in its negative connotation- deception for the sake of gain or trickery. The simple truth is a lot of the music business is smoke and mirrors, as we negotiate truth from fiction.  The public often cobbles together its own idea of who we are as public presenters of music and entertainment, and we can often disappoint them by simply being ourselves. This is a difficult line to negotiate, especially when we realize it is the illusion, as Maugham eloquently states, that they love.

In a metaphysical sense, we become what we think about all the time. If we doubt ourselves and our abilities, we certainly cannot expect to achieve our dreams. In this season of All Hallow’s Eve, allow smoke and mirrors to take the sheen of positivity and use this illusion as a stepping stone to open dreams and imagination.

Imagine success (whatever you perceive it to be) and gratification. Ponder your refection in a mirror and imagine yourself happily plying your music craft and presenting your gift to those who most appreciate it. Meditate on a lovely, burning candle in front of a mirror and as you close your meditation, blow out the candle. Concentrate on the smoke and mirror image and see yourself as a more focused and centered human, ready to tackle this mysterious realm of music and spirit gifts and magic.
