“Nothing contributes so much to tranquilize the mind as a steady purpose-a point on which the soul may fix its intellectual eye.”- Mary Shelley (author of Frankenstein)

Mary Shelley needed tranquility and a steady purpose. The author of the novel Frankenstein, Mary’s life was rife with heartbreak, loss and tragedy.  Raised by her father after her mother died in childbirth, at seventeen she fell in love with the married poet Percy Shelley. The couple lived in ostracism, shame and debt, and suffered an additional blow when Mary’s first pregnancy ended in the death of a premature daughter. When she was twenty, she married Shelley, after his first wife committed suicide and after her own half sister took her life. During the summer of 1817, Mary and Percy spent time in Switzerland with Lord Byron. It was in this place Mary conceived and wrote Frankenstein, the story of a scientist who cobbles together a being from corpses in an attempt to animate life from death.

October, with its focus on Halloween ghosts, spirits and monsters, reminds us that endings are an inevitable part of life. But closings also birth new possibiliites and plans, if we will only keep our intellectual eye fixed on a steady purpose.  From a defunct musical group springs a songwriting partnership. The demise of one band proves fertile ground for beginning another. As artists, we often find ourselves piecing together a living. The Frankenstein analogy of cobbling the useless parts of a whole together to make something new is a particular seasonal point for consideration and meditation.

We all find ourselves in situations that simply are not in harmony with our current wants and needs. When this happens, we often think only of the ending that is before us. Consider, instead of the ending,  the miracle of self discovery of a new beginning. Keep your soul’s eye fixed on your steady purpose and breathe in new discoveries, original ideas and fresh paths. You are a creature of infinite purpose and possibility. Recognize that an ending is only another sweet beginning.
