December 02-We make a life by what we give….

“”We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”-Winston Churchill

Musicians can tell you the moment they recognized their gift. For all of us there is a defining moment in our musical lives that told us,”This is it, this is what I want to do with my life .” For all of us the giving of our musical selves as performers, is reciprocated as an audience responds to our giving. Therefore the art of giving is the art of receiving as well. Daily life is an opportunity to give countless gifts. Gifts don’t always come wrapped in shiny paper with a big red bow. The best gifts rarely fit into boxes.

This is the perfect time of year to adopt giving on a daily basis. A gift is a smile, a kind word, an understanding comment. The music world is not a normal business world. We are all trying to make a living in a realm where the places we put our feet everyday change and shift. This is not only true of musicians but of club owners, talent buyers, bartenders, audio techs, stage hands and lighting directors. Our world as performers encompasses people of all ages, genders and personalities and is often a very difficult place made all the more mysterious by the constant presence of substances and alcohol. We navigate a highly competitive market where today’s golden band is tomorrow’s has been. We work in a business where our talent is based on ticket and tee shirts sales instead of honest artistic value.

Make it a daily policy to give to others. Whether it’s a kind word, a caring comment or a helping hand, work to make yourself a positive source of good energy. You elevate yourself, your band mates and your audience by understanding the powerful dynamic of giving in the music world.
