December 07- Give Happiness a Comfortable Seat…

DECEMBER 7

“When happiness shows up – give it a comfortable seat.” – Old Fezziwig/Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol

Tis the season of bells and carols and joy and love. Tis also the season of deep sighs, unpleasant memories, failed hopes and dashed dreams. Christmas sheds light on all manner of sweet and sour stops along life’s path. The holiday itself is built around the hopeful heart as we celebrate the birth of a savior to humanity.  Pagans celebrate the end of the long days of winter and the anticipation of the return of spring and mother nature in all her glory.  A season of celebration is often tempered with feelings of happiness as we gather for parties and activities, but is also a time of distress as we miss loved ones who have passed over, moved away or are no longer part of our lives.

Indeed, when happiness shows its sweet face to you this season, give it a comfortable seat. Make happiness welcome in your world. The music business and the musicians who populate it are sometimes not an easy or happy lot.  Our creativity often keeps us focused on the past instead of the present. But it is our creativity that is our most precious and spiritual gift.

Today, find happiness. Whether you find it at the mall watching children interact with Santa or at a local pub where the tree has just gone up in the corner or at a private event where you are performing – find it. Look for happiness, notice the faces of people and if there is no smile – figure out a way to put one there. The easiest way to do this is to simply smile at someone. Even a baby will smile back. It is very hard not to return a smile when it is given away.  Learn to live with great love in your heart. Learn to find happiness in every instant of life.

It is not how much we HAVE, but how much we enjoy that makes happiness.” Charles Spargeon
