A tidy soul…

Be careless in your dress if you will, but keep a tidy soul.  ~Mark Twain

Ah, the temptations of new clothes, new shoes, new boots, new coats, new hats are everywhere this season. Slick magazines and mall advertisements convince us we are the shabbiest of humans. With a new diamond ring, your on the rocks relationship can be saved, a new car will solve every problem you have and new clothes, well, clothes do make the man, right?

While researching this subject, I was impressed to read a quote from Christopher Walken extolling the virtues of wearing black. “It always looks neat and fairly clean…”  Music Icon Johnny Cash made a fashion statement by sticking to basic black.  Despite fashion magazines, commercials and store windows, a basic wardrobe, something that feels good and looks fairly neat is easily achievable and fashionably safe.  Simplicity, it seems, makes a statement of its own.

It’s not what is on us, what decorates our bodies, that truly counts. It’s what is inside. It is our tidy soul that matters most, our innate sense of confidence and attitude are our most fashion forward commodities.  The writer Janet Lane professes, “Of all the things you wear, your expression is the most important.”   A bright smile, a sense of positive energy and a good attitude are more important than cool shoes, the right designer tee shirt or jeans or what sort of jewelry you sport.

Be a slave to a tidy soul, your creativity, art and beauty, not the trappings of clothing.  Wear what is neat, clean and comfortable to you. Make warmth and caring, a grateful countenance and an uplifting spirit your personal fashion statement this holiday season.
