Publicity and Promotion: What is promotion?

The difference between publicity and promotion usually involves a promoter. A promoter is a person who invests in a show for a return.  A promoter may receive a cut of ticket sales or a significant percentage of backend to cover his promotional expenses. A promoter is usually hired by venues and clubs to create higher visibility for the club and its shows.

Promotion is also “something devised to publicize or advertise a product, cause, institution, etc., as a brochure, free sample, poster, television or radio commercial, or personal appearance.”

As a DIY band member or manager, you may find yourself combining publicity and promotional tools to help bring visibility and interest to your shows.
