How to structure a band as business: The Publicist
Publicity is the act of seeking attention for shows. Whether that attention comes from media, television, websites, calendar listings or a dedicated street team, publicity is how your band gets known.
Publicity may be handled in house. An in house publicist (someone in your group) sends posters, press releases, arranges interviews with radio and in store playing opportunities where applicable.
You also may have a budget to hire a tour publicist. His or her job will be to promote appearances. There are two kinds of publicist: the tour publicist and a dedicated publicist who is part of the growth of your group. A dedicated publicist will usually be good with the written word, have a great network of media and radio, and will be able to recognize endorsement opportunies. He or she may manage the bands consignments and generally seeks to exploit (and i mean that in the good sense of the word) the band’s music in any way possible.
