Musicians and Money-Creating more income

bruce-hampton1

As musicians, we sometimes only think of live performance opportunities as a way to create income for ourselves. Take some time today to really consider the skills being a musician give to you and find ways to creatively use those attributes to generate more income.

Teaching comes quickly to mind as a way to creatively increase income.  Talk to schools, daycares, churches or civic organizations about arranging a 45 minute performance program for children. Develop a 3 day seminar and teach in the public schools. Contact your local arts organization about being on their roster of touring artists.

If teaching isn’t your thing, consider studio work or create music bites for music catalogs.  Offer your services to write sheet music or create an original piece for a wedding or special event.  Be background music at a wine tasting or gallery show or corporate party.

Take Colonel Bruce Hampton and Yonrico Scott’s (Derek Trucks Band) lead, and create art. The Colonel paints. Yonrico Scott paints drum heads and set lists. Very creative ideas for the musically inclined.

Make sure people know what you do and that you can do it many different ways. Music is art.
