Musicians and Health- Self Comfort

Carlas Photos 027Comfort – to console, to gladden, to offer relief.

As a touring musician, comfort is often hard to come by. We’re away from the love and affection of friends and family, far away from the sweetness of home and hearth. We expend tremendous amounts of energy on the road as we present our music to audiences.  The effort of performance is all encompassing, especially when we travel out of our home region into the great beyond of national and international touring.

It becomes imperative to our happiness and peace of mind that we offer ourselves comfort and compassion in tour world.  We may have no one around us to truly care for our well being or inner calm. Therefore, we must find it for ourselves.

Stay away from the false self comforts of drugs and alcohol and concentrate on lasting and meaningful communion with yourself.  Breath consciously and deeply and learn to control the chaotic state of travel and performance. Closing your eyes for even five minutes has a deep and calming effect in even the most extreme circumstances. Meditate on the photos of loved ones who are far away. Instead of listening to music on the IPOD, try sounds of nature- rain, birds, flowing water.

Remember “you are a child of the universe. No less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here…” (from the Desiderata).

Music is a powerful gift. Spread it lovingly but be mindful of yourself and your own health, happiness and comfort.
