How to Tour 101- the Publicist
“Publicity is the act of getting ink. Publicity is getting unpaid media to pay attention, write you up, point to you, run a picture, make a commotion. Publicity is NOT PR (public relations).” – Seth Godin
If the booking agent is your conduit between desire to play and actually getting your group on the road, then the publicist is the band’s mouthpiece. A publicist informs the general public where and when you’ll be performing.
A publicist uses many avenues of communication to spread the word about your gig. She may use email press releases to her network of writers and reviewers and she may take advantage of social networking tools like myspace.com, twitter and facebook to spread the news about your engagement. A publicist may send promotional packages to her writers or may ask the band or the band’s office person to handle this responsibility. She calls to follow up email press release and sent packages and attempts to schedule an interview with the band.
Free ink and audio is a challenge in this new world of economics. A publicist is a valuable asset to any touring band.
