The ABCs of Rock-hospitality, happiness, habit, harmony, hearing
Hospitality- generally food and beverage comped for the band. Hospitality usually means a deli tray and maybe a fruit tray along with assorted beverages put in the band’s dressing room. Hospitality can also be a buy out (money given to the band by the venue) of $10 -15 per person or in the case of a bar/restaurant, hospitality can mean comping the band’s meal.
happiness- sew a bunch of happiness and it’ll all come back to you. The road is a difficult place. Recording is not easy. Rehearsing is gruelling. Maintaining an artists income is tricky. Happiness is an attitude of gratitude for your talent and ability.
habit- practicing is a habit. Keeping the van clean is a habit. Making sure everything is in the truck at load out is a habit. Habits are repetitive practices. There are good ones and bad ones. Hopefully the good ones outweigh the bad ones.
Harmony- traveling with people is not the most fun in the world so it’s best to keep the idea of harmony front and center in your daily tour life as well as your playing life. Remember to tune your instrument and yourself on a daily basis.
Hearing- as a person who now has tinnitus as the result of blasting guitar amps, WEAR EARPLUGS. Protect your hearing. It’s dismaying to not be able to go to live performances because of the incessant ringing in your ears. PROTECT YOUR HEARING.
