Indivisibility

adjective 1. not divisible; not separable into parts; incapable of being divided.

Indivisible as a word has intrigued me from childhood. It was perhaps the first big, five syllable word I’d heard as I learned the Pledge of Allegiance. “…and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

I started playing music when I was eight and got my first guitar at ten and was playing in bands the next year. Our first show as a three-piece group was opening for a magician. I was the guitarist and singer in the band and the Levitating Girl in the magician’s act. I was not paid to be the guitarist but the Levitating Girl gave me $10 bucks for my pocket, quite a sum for a ten-year old kid in 1968.

Forty two years later, here I am in the music business. I divide my time between promoting my art (unpaid writing) and promoting the art of other musicians, bands and businesses (paid writing).

It occurred to me this morning I’m still the musician/ Levitating Girl.  That what I do for a living and what I do to live are indivisible.  There’s no separation between what I am and what I do. And while I follow my dreams, I still have to be the Levitating Girl to put money in my pocket.

In a way this is sad. It means no escape. It also means constantly weaving daily tendrils of life and music into income, dreams into reality and highways of hope into new frontiers.
