Be Happy

“A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones…” Proverbs 17:22

“Don’t worry ….be happy.” – Bobby McFerrin

Over 50% of how we “feel” is genetic. If our parents were down and depressed, we have a 50% chance of feeling the same way. Ten percent of how we feel is circumstantial. Our feelings about money, aspirations, work and family account for only 10% of our emotional state.

The other 40% of the equation is determined BY EACH ONE OF US!  We actually have the ability to elevate our mood by simply improving our thoughts and deciding to feel good. Self-talk, that continual conversation in our head all day long, is 40% of  feeling good or feeling bad. When you think of it, it’s a phenomenal percentage.

The citizens of Denmark are among the happiest people on the planet. They also pay the highest taxes of any population in the world- a tax system that dotes on them with perfect health care. A recent survey confirmed they feel safe and comforted that their nation will take care of its own. Interestingly, the Danish government offers stipends to clubs or hobby organizations consisting of two or more people. 92% of Danes are a member of a singing or dancing group. There organizations of  hobbyists and bands and people who write poetry. All of these enterprises are  encouraged and paid for by the government. The Danes have Your Tax Dollars at Work figured out.

Remember the 40% solution. You determine your joy of life. Focus less on the material and more on the spiritual. Join a club or organization. Sing, dance and find a way to be merry. Your quality of life depends on it.
